Welcome to Food Services!

Food Services Mission: Safety, Healthy, Ethical, Personal Best

Our vision is that children are eating and enjoying safe and healthful foods prepared with care by the food service employees, in a hospitable environment. The children are greeted with respect and spoken to in a gentle voice. Each food service employee puts forth their personal best in their daily tasks for themselves, co-workers, and most importantly for the child.

Special notes for parents:
  • If a parent or guardian has NOT completed a new student lunch application for the 2009-2010 school year, the application from 2008-2009 will expire and their child will become paid status.  Please see the cafeteria manager or come to the District Office to complete a new lunch application.  Call 1-310-263-3990 with any questions.

  • Each year a new lunch application is required. If your child was free or reduced status this last year, they will start being charged for their lunches once last year's application expires. A paid student is allowed to charge up to three meals only, or $6.75 for elementary and $7.50 for middle and high school students. Do not hesitate! Complete a new application now. Call 1-310-263-3990 for more information, or see your cafeteria manager.
  • Lunch applications are mandatory for all kindergarten students.
Pay in advance and receive a discount.

The Hawthorne School District takes part in the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs.  These programs are federally funded.  The financial goal of the food services department is to continue to provide meals that follow the federal and state guidelines, staying fiscally sound, without negatively impacting the general fund.  We are proud to say that this has been the reality for a number of years.

The following is a partial list of operational considerations we need to take into account when planning our menus:

  • Federal and state regulations regarding a reimbursable meal
  • Food, labor, and equipment expenses
  • USDA commodity usage
  • Food availability from school food service vendors and distributors
  • Storage space
  • Delivery times from distributor to schools
  • Kitchen equipment
  • Staffing
  • Food quality
  • Nutrition:  Our menus are analyzed for the following nutrients: calories, total fat, saturated fat, trans-fats, vitamin A, vitamin C, iron, calcium
  • Student preferences
  • Principal concerns
  • Teacher concerns
  • Parent concerns

Feel free to contact us if you have questions. Enjoy!
